Pray like Jesus!

Matthew 6:9-13 “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive this who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever, Amen.”

The one thing the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to do was to pray. Traditionally, this has become known as the “Lord’s Prayer”. In fact, it should be renamed the “Disciples Prayer” because it was for our benefit, not Jesus. Jesus never committed any sin, so Jesus never had to pray for forgiveness but in the prayer taught by Jesus, he taught the disciples to ask for forgiveness. In addition, this prayer contains within it all the key ingredients needed for a powerful breakthrough in every area of your life.

Prayer is WORSHIP: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Begin with praise and worship of God’s goodness every time you enter into God’s presence. Worship lifts your focus off of yourself and magnifies God’s greatness over your life.

Prayer establishes GOD’S RULE: Your kingdom come means for the authority of God’s kingdom to be present in your daily life.

Prayer aligns with GOD’S WILL: Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Prayer releases the abundant resource of heaven into the earthly realm so that more and more of our natural reality looks more and more like the kingdom of heaven.

Prayer PETITIONS and RECEIVES by faith: Give us this day our daily bread. Prayer deals with the practical areas of our lives. God delights to give good things to those who ask in faith.

Prayer is REPENTANCE: And forgive us our trespasses. Repentance is turning away from self and turning towards God. In prayer God gives us the strength to overcome sin.

Prayer releases GRACE for RELATIONSHIPS: As we also forgive those who trespass against us. Because of the fall of humanity, our relational worlds are under the stress of brokenness. In prayer we receive grace to reconcile and engage in healthy relationships.

Prayer builds CHARACTER: Lead us not into temptation. In prayer we find the strength to become more like Jesus and resist the temptation of the enemy and our flesh.

Prayer is SPIRITUAL WARFARE: Deliver us from evil. One of the primary weapons to fight against Satan is prayer. Pray in the Spirit on all occasions and you’ll discover grace and power to be victorious over all the attacks of the enemy against you.

Prayer is DECLARATION: For yours is the kingdom. Prayer partners with the primary message of Jesus, the gospel of the kingdom. Prayer isn’t passive, it’s forceful declaration of God’s heart for his kingdom to be established in the earthly realm.

Prayer releases God’s POWER and PRESENCE: The power and the glory forever and ever, Amen. Without prayer, we have no access to God’s power. We need power top effect change in our lives and in the earth. In prayer we become aware of God’s glorious presence. Prayer manifests the glory of God. Selah!

Here Am I, Send Me!

Isaiah 6:8-9 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people..”

God is looking to and fro across the earth for people he can use to accomplish specific assignments in the building of his kingdom. Before Isaiah became a prominent prophetic voice to Israel, he firstly was an everyday believer in God who made himself available. Availability is the first prerequisite for being used mightily by God. Isaiah 1:19 says, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land“. To answer God’s call on your life, you must be first willing and secondly obedient. Not only did God call Isaiah but he counselled him in what to say. Too often we are attempting to come up with something inspirational that will connect with people, rather than simply sharing out of the well of what God has already revealed to us. If you want God to call you and use you mightily, first examine your heart and ask, “Am I available? Am I willing? Am I going to obey what he’s asked me to do? Selah!

The Mouth Speaks what the Heart Believes!

Matthew 12:34 “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Jesus’ teaching is simple and yet deeply profound. Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees about the connection between what’s in their hearts and what’s coming out of their mouths. Our words are a direct reflection of whatever is going on in our hearts. A tree is known by its fruit. Whatever the condition of the tree, so shall the fruit of the tree be. Our words are the fruit of the health or sickness of our hearts. It’s no use trying to control our tongues (James 3:8) if we first aren’t allowing the Holy Spirit to change the condition of our hearts. If we want the quality of what we say to improve, the health of our hearts must become our primary priority. This requires us to become heart conscious, not just word conscious. Many of us attempt to keep up appearances with our words but neglect the weightier matter’s of the heart. Ask God to change your heart and your words will take care of themselves. Explosive Insights!

What you say is what you get!

Proverbs 18:21 The power of life and death is in the tongue!

Your future is literally being created by the words you speak out of your mouth. There’s a direct correlation between the words you speak and the life you live. Consider your words carefully for by your words you will be justified and by your words you’ll be condemned. You can literally talk yourself into a feeling or circumstance and directly out of them as well. If you’re not happy with where you find yourself in life, consider changing your words. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Whatever the theme of your heart is, that will be reflected in the words of your mouth. There is creative power in our mouths and we need to steward it accordingly.

From Heart to Mouth!

The condition of your heart will determine the content of your mouth. You can only keep quiet on what you really think and feel for so long until the volcano erupts and someone eavesdrop’s in on what is really going on in your personal world. If you want to change the content of your talk, you must allow God to change the theme of your heart. When God changes your heart, his desires become your desires, his thoughts become your thoughts, his ways become your ways and his words become your words.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “The burning heart will soon find for itself a flaming tongue.” When your heart burns for God, your words will ignite and inspire passion in others.

Your Steps Are Ordered!

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord orders his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

God is a lifesaver! We live in a day and age where we are encouraged to follow our heart, as if, each of us intuitively know what we should do by consulting our own hearts. This is not helpful advice because Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, who can understand it?” The answer is no one but God can actually help us understand our own hearts. We are complex and simple at the same time. For this reason, I take courage from the fact that even though, my misunderstood heart, may plan my way, the creator of the universe orders my steps. There have been several times when my heart wanted to head in a certain direction but God has patiently aligned my steps with his purpose and plan for my life. Truth is, I’ve bucked against his alignment at times but in hindsight, I’ve always been grateful for where God has positioned my feet.

Money Follows Passion!

money“For where your treasure is, there your heart is also.” (Matthew 6:21)

What you spend your money on is what your heart values the most. Consider where you have invested your finances recently. What does your investment say about what is most important to you? Lip service is fashionable in our culture but heart service is more concrete and a true reflection of what you truly value. What your heart loves, your will chooses. Money follows passion. Whatever you are passionate about will be resourced. What if we really took Jesus charge seriously, to invest our money in eternal matters, not simply the temporary? We would probably see a spiritual revolution take place. For this to become a reality, self needs to be crucified and Jesus needs to take centre stage of our hearts. Only then we will be surrendered enough to release into God’s hands what he has put into our hands!
